Hello my metal dudes and steel dudettes. It’s been one month since the 2015 South Africa Metal Music Awards (SAMMA) came and went. How’s life treating y’all?
Ok, so after the SAMMA that occurred on July 20th, we here at AudioInferno Towers had a meeting and we was like:
What are these bands like?
I mean they are Africans and they are all pretty good at what they do. We saw pictures of people rocking out and going crazy over some of their music at the recent Winterfest.
Very soon, the first rock music festival will take place here in Nigeria. That’s why AudioInferno is here. To find the young and talented in the rock genre, to bring them out wherever they are hiding, as well as supporting all the existing bands and solo acts. Already, we’re seeing some progress with people like Clay. She can sing, I mean just call Clay when you want to give birth to your child, the baby will come out easy, in short, the mother will be smiling while giving birth, Nathmac sings like Switchfoot, Judah (DJ) from 1LastAutograph can growl a demon back to the abyss, when a person is possessed and shiii, you don’t need to call a voodoo person or consult a deity, just call on Judah to growl it out! Then there’s our very own AxlPif, I have never seen any guy that can play a speedy riff like him here in Nigeria. I know they are lots of people who are capable, we just don’t know them. Yet. We will find them! You can check out his post on the issues of rock music in Nigeria which he wrote for the Guardian Life as well as an earlier post a guest writer wrote as well HERE…
Anyway. Moving swiftly along. We decided to ask the various winners at the SAMMA, how they felt about the awards and if they had any messages for their fans. Read their reactions and messages below.
MAN AS MACHINE: BEST METAL VIDEO AWARD
So Man as Machines! Whenever I think of machines, I think of Sarah Connor, LOL. Don’t blame me, blame Terminator. Okay they got to say one or two words to their fans…
Message to fans:
Ah man we couldn’t be happier with winning the award. Not only because it’s the first one we have won but also because we had so many amazing people work on that video putting in countless hours to make it what it is. Always nice to be rewarded for hard work.
We at AudioInferno have been welcomed to the family of Machines
If you wanna be part of the family, go to to a nearby shop, get their album or buy it online. Support your local rock acts!
ADORNED IN ASH: BEST DEATH METAL BAND AWARD
Adorned in Ash (AiA) is a female fronted Christian Extreme Hybrid Metal band from Pretoria, South Africa. Their influences include thrash, speed and groove metal to more progressive & technical death & black metal. Ultimately, the band exists for one purpose and one purpose only, and that is to bring glory to the One Eternal and Mighty God, who sent His Son Jesus Christ to rescue us from hell and ourselves. Whenever I hear or see the word Ash, the quote that comes to mind is “From ash we are born and from ash we shall return”.
This band is also featured in Jackson Guitars .
Message to Fans:
It was great to be recognized by fans and peers. A lot of hard work has gone into this band over many years and it’s great to reap some rewards. We are actively writing material for the second album and we intend to start recording this in the New Year. Our début album is available across the world and all the links can be found on our website in order to buy it at www.adornedinash.com
POVERTY OF IDEALS: BEST PROGRESSIVE METAL AWARD
I think they’re a breath of fresh air, to the music scene in Africa. Think about it, there are a lot of bands favouring the Hardcore sub genre or the Death Metal genre, but these guys chose to focus on the instruments only. Which means two things:
The have a lot of balls and they’re super confident in their individual skills.
There aren’t too many Progressive Metal bands here in Africa (at least to my knowledge) but you feel Poverty Of Ideals doing more than enough to foster a trend.
Message to fans:
It was a real honour to win that award and we really do appreciate the recognition, but at the end of the day this isn’t a competition. When the Rock/Metal scene is as small as it is in SA and Africa in general, there needs to be a sense of unity and brotherhood, not competition.
Every band we know gives it their all and works really hard on their music and that is all our scene needs to grow and thrive. The fact that there is an awards evening dedicated to metal music means that things are growing, which is awesome!
We are in the process of working on new music and we’re loving the direction it’s heading. We can’t wait to share it with everyone but at this point we don’t have any set dates on a release.
CARNAGE CARNIVAL: BEST THRASH METAL AWARD
Carnage Carnival is a 5-piece metal band from Durban, South Africa. The band’s music consists of thrash/groove influenced guitar riffs, with a vocal style in the vein of Pantera and Sepultura.
Message to fans:
We would just like to thank our fans for voting for us! We really didn’t expect to win 🙂. Yeah we will be releasing a guitar playthrough of our song “Fountain Of Youth” in honor of the award 🙂
BOARGAZM: BEST LIVE ACT, BEST NU METAL AND BEST ALBUM
When I first heard the name Boargazm, I thought of pigs. I wasn’t wrong. They are the Pig Whisperers that were immediately born a hundred years earlier to tell the fate of Mankind.
BOOM THERE YOU GO!
This band won three awards, I don’t know whether the Pig Whisperers saw this in the future that they would win but fair enough they deserved it because they are awesome, very awesome .This guys are very hard-working and energetic and active in terms of shows, gigs in South Africa
Message to fans:
We are very proud to have won three South African metal awards! We are now focusing on recording our third album, we also have two national tours left this year and one international tour to Russia, Latvia, and Estonia. We thank each and everyone for their support! It means more than you know.
ZOMBIES ATE MY GIRLFRIEND: BEST CORE METAL
When I first heard that band name, I initially thought of some cannibal shit and some Resident Evil underground killings, then I get their album and I’m listening to them when a friend of mine saw the album art and he calls me a zombie for no reason whatsoever. Okay, maybe he had a reason. Hahaha.
So this guys are raw and aggressively insane! Their vocals are like a rusty chainsaw taking the life out of someone. Epic shiii right there. I might be a bit too excited…
Message to fans:
It’s very validating to win the award. I mean things can be tough, working your ass off on the band, trying to maximize every opportunity that gets flung your way. There are definitely more times were things result in disappointment than success, such is the nature of the music game. So to get a pat on the back and a job well done really does wonders for morale and we are very grateful for winning an award this year.
Some people, bands, when they are disappointed, they back down. Oh no, don’t do that. It means you got to step your game up, yo. Zombies Ate My Girlfriend are close with AudioInferno and we love their hustle. Their next show is on the 26th of September, 2015 at Krank’d Up Music Festival. The festival features some of the best South African alternative and metal acts and they’ll be playing on the main stage alongside 36Crazyfists and Monuments.
Awesome, right? So y’all Zombie fans, you got to come for the show and support them.
THEATRE RUNS RED: BEST BLACKENED DEATH METAL
Awesome band! I just love me some Blackened Death Metal. It’s always fascinating to see local bands attempting the rather niche sub-genre.
Message to fans:
We are so excited to have received the SAMMA Award for best Blackened Death metal band in South Africa. It has been a long journey. Winning an award like this just drives us to push ourselves harder than ever before! We are truly grateful for this amazing honour.
Many exciting things are in store for Theatre Runs Red fans for 2016! Got a couple of new things up our sleeves regarding live performances plus a couple of other things that are long overdue! We cannot wait to present all this to the people, our fans and friends, who have helped us live our dream!

So it has been a good year for these bands. Countless bands and fans alike have come and gone this year, but the spirit of the Awards has always remained the same; as we like to say here at AudioInferno Towers, it’s not about who wins and loses, but about discovering new bands, supporting them and enjoying good music. Support your local rock acts!
Once again congratulations to our winners. However, more importantly, congratulations to those fans who found new bands, and those bands who found new fans.
Okay, that’s it.
