8 Ladies Of African Rock You Should Know About

nyemba-cd-launch-skinflint12

Ever seen a woman hold a bass guitar? No, I’m not talking about ransom models holding bass guitars in photo studios and all that jive. I’m talking about a woman, holding a bass guitar, in a music video, at a concert, at an arena, playing that bass better than a man would, that’s what I’m talking about here. Growing up as a kid I wasn’t exactly thinking like a normal kid. While everyone wanted a poster of Michael Jackson’s BAD on their wall, I was leaning towards a woman with big-hair wielding an axe much bigger than her. The thought of that made me soapy (inner circle reference, the guys get it.)

Women down the years have shown one thing: they are more than capable when it comes to competing. Some, way better than men and you know the best part, they don’t think they are in any competition, (I’ll assume) they do it for the FUN. *cue in that Cyndi Lauper soon now* … I just played that song while writing this here, gosh what a great song.

Now here in Africa, is it any surprise to find women having a say in Rock music. Will you be surprised if I mentioned some who love this music and are actively involved with the growth of it all? Do you really need to answer that? There are way too many lovely ladies doing it big out there. I’ll let you in on some here. Names will be left out and I apologies for that (you only get one of those a year.) It’s safe to say this here is for all the women out there shaking their heads, shredding their guitars, slapping the bass, slamming the drums and sitting behind the scenes, bring Rock music in Africa. Stay awesome ladies.

The Soapgirls

The Soapgirls

Interesting starting with them, originally from Paris (born in Paris more accurately) but based in South Africa, these ladies have managed to fuse genres which includes Grunge, Punk and Alternative into something I suspect they’ll call their own. For me what’s really great about these girls is their goofy and comical nature which is outright loveable. Here’s a pointer, go to their Instagram page and errr… yea.

Alessandra Sbrana

Alessandra Sbrana

You wanna knows what’s cooler than a guy on drums? A woman on drums. That’s right, yea I said it, WORT?? Alessandra Sbrana beats the Hell out of this band you should totally know about called Skinflint. We had an interview with them back when we kicked off AudioInferno. Awesome guys too, a sick 3-piece band with a kick ass drummer to match.

Azaliyah Bester

Azaliyah Bester

You remember that one band I enjoy talking about, DevilSpeak? Yea, see, they have a guitarist who stands side by side with Dewet Loots, who also happens to play for the very same band. If you’re standing next to Dewet, then you must be good. (Stories from a source, you read nothing from me) Azaliyah Bester “might” be the face of DevilSpeak one may think but I honestly don’t think the band care about “image,” from what I seen and read about them they function pretty tight and having Azaliyah in the band makes them complete.

Zainab Sule

Zainab Sule

Ah yes, out very own Zainab Sule. She seems to represent the sort of beacon we should always watch out for, from what I hear her on stage vibe matches her persona which just makes her “the lady you want to hang out with.” Soft rock is her forte and a pleasure she is to listen to any day.

Marcita Maree

Marcita Maree

Sooooooooooooooooooo remember what I said about a lady on bass, oh yea! Marcita plays for the band The Insomniac Diaries, we had the pleasure of doing a joint interview with them a while back along with the band Orchard too, you should check that out here folks. Mean on the bass when called on stage, she also has a passion for photography… Not so sure why I said that. No, like really I have no idea.

Blessed with an insane vocal range, CLAY can easily be considered “our export to the world.” Asides her voice she’s proven to be adaptable, trying out different genres (asides Metal.) It definitely doesn’t hurt to be able to do a lot in the Rock music scene. There are rumors about an album coming out soon. Will be looking to score an interview with her soon, I need to try something.

Gloria Bahati Sangwa

With a massive following from Kenya, it’s safe to assume there must be guys back there who have a poster of her on their wall or something along that line. Word is, she’s also a fan favourite too from the band.

Rasha Magdy

Rasha Magdy

Rasha Magdy, the beautiful and amazing lead singer of the band, Enraged. They are the relentless, stubborn and persistent band all the way from Egypt. We had really comprehensive chat with her so be sure to check that out HERE and HERE.

To think these are the only ladies doing Rock music proud in Africa would be silly really. There are hundreds of female headbangers, Metal heads, producers and many many more. If you don’t see a name on this here “short list” feel free to leave names in the comment section. They need to be highlighted in anyway possible.

Cheers to the ladies of Rock in Africa.

  1. Awesome list am proud of Africa ladies. Truth be told the women in Africa are under rated cos they are better musicians than their male counterparts. Thank you for shining the light on them. You should also check out this new artist Max Wuyah from Nigeria. I was blown away when I heard her song Surrender.
