Remember the times when guys would ask you for your favourite band and you’d have to think? This isn’t like that. Well it is but not really. You see, there are times when a band just does things that make you happy. Like release a free Christmas single, or visit fans in person and hang out with them. It ain’t always about the music. I mean it is but not always. You know what I mean? Anyway, this past year has been fun. I’ve gotten the opportunity to talk shop with a number of bands and it’s been a lot of fun. But alas, the list must be finite.
So, on with the list!!
40 DAY JOURNEY
These guys are so much fun! And they make hardcore music. I mean the genre. However, they are hardcore, too. They released a song this year which was recorded with live instruments. No computer editing. Just raw awesomeness. It’s hard to fathom why there’s not much more noise in about these guys. They make good music, yo. I also like that they are a Christian outfit. Now I know there’s the “What’s with all this religious talk in metal, yo?” Well…
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION! EXPRESS YOUR FAITH AS YOU EMBARK ON YOUR JOURNEY OF LIFE THAT STRETCHES BEYOND 40 DAYS!!!!
Honestly, their single Mirrors is enough reason for them to be on this list. They have had a great year with the imminent release of their album Jahr. Nice, easy to talk to, humble and lets not forget, they have Rasha Magdy on vocal duty.
ZOMBIES ATE MY GIRLFRIEND
Here we have the guys who made me pay attention to the Death Metal from Africa. Their album was WELL DONE, they had a lot of strong songs, released a video showing fans how to play their song, their stage presence is dope. And their name, ZOMBIES ATE MY GIRLFRIEND, is brilliant and funny. I expected a band with that name to do emo-core, hardcore punk, maybe metalcore. However, their blend of Death Metal and Deathcore is a welcomed twist.
Ghana’s masked crusaders did good this year. With their dark presentation and diverse sound portfolio, they graced the ears of rock fans all over the continent of Africa AND BEYOND. With 3 singles released from their upcoming full-length album and all their award nominations, they’re a band that’s going places.

The day I heard VOLUME 10, was the day I fell in love with their music. These guys have worked hard to bring out quality tracks and have succeeded. They have a number of live shows that can be watched on YouTube, an upcoming album and a fun music video for “MAOS AO AI” song off their EP, that came out last year. They’ve had a very good year. Even bagged an award at AFRIMA, which kinda surprised me ’cause I’m used to bands with the less edgy sound winning rock awards.
For more on the awards, you are already at the right place but if you’re still unsure, go here.
