the just

And we are back with the promised interview we said we are going to let the whole Africa know about The Just which is also the band of the month here at Audioinferno. So we are going to be talking and getting to know Marcel(guitarist), Ilona(vocalist) and Steph(Drummer), they would be telling us everything we need to know about the band and yes they are a new and an upcoming band. We have talked to this guys before and i like their band spirit animal, click here to know more about The Just.

Austin of Audioinferno: Hey guys my name is Austin and i am going to be taking you guys on this interview so introduce yourself.

Marcel:

Hi, I’m Marcel, I play the bass and basically the admin person and manager all into one.

Illona Grobler:

Hi I’m Illona, I’m the lead vocalist of the band.

Stefan Marais:

I’m Stef and I play drums for The Just.

Austin: Good introduction, well I’m Austin, the head of bands and chief interviewer of Audioinferno.

Marcel:

Yeah you are man!

Illona Grobler:

Cool Austin, Nice to meet you.

Austin: Nice to meet y’all so how did you guys meet?

Marcel:

From my side, I have been friends with the 2 guitarists for a few years now. Illona I know from since we were very young. Her dad and my dad are very good friends but we lost contact completely. When we started the band we asked her to come audition and she got the gig. Through her I met Stef (they were dating or almost dating at that stage) and he just turned out to be one of the best drummers probably in the world.

Stefan Marais:

Hahaha yep thats the story.

Illona Grobler:

Yes that is basically it in a nutshell, Stefan and I met each other at a camp where some of his friends were playing guitar and I walked passed them and we wrote a song together and saw each other a year later.

Austin: When was your band actually formed?

Marcel:

About November 2014 but only really started last year.

Stefan Marais:

Yes last year.

Austin: So as an upcoming band, what do you guys really feel you can offer to the rock scene in South Africa.

Illona Grobler:

Good question, we are such a blend of styles that we hope to bring a fresh flavor, something energetic.

Marcel:

Wow that is tough, but I think we bring a unique flavor with what we do. We feel music should mean something to people inspiring people as well as be entertaining.

Stefan Marais:

I would say a crazy new Pop mosh vibe that will bring people together to inspire them in a way that they will feel motivated and loved.

Austin: Good, have you guys ever played on stage before?

Stefan Marais:

Yes indeed man, thats my favourite.

Marcel:

Yeah bro couple of times. We live for it!! We go crazy.

Illona Grobler:

Yes, then we go crazy.

Austin: How many shows have you guys actually played since the inception of your band?

Illona Grobler:

Whoa a lot, our first gig was last year march and we’ve played a lot of small gigs and some bigger gigs as well. But we stopped for about 3 months last year, because of the car accident.

Marcel:

Yeah that holted things for a while. Yeah but we took every opportunity we could even some house parties.

Austin: Give me the highest number of fans that have been on your gig.

Marcel:

About +- 100 at Firkin.

Austin: What was your first song or cover on stage?

Stefan Marais:

I think Zombie by The Cranberries.

Illona Grobler:

Zombie from Cranberries.

Austin: Where you guys scared on your first stage play?

Illona Grobler:

Yeah a lot and I’m still nervous sometimes but always excited.

Marcel:

Yeah man, even though we all have been on stage before, in this band the nerves never go away.

Stefan Marais:

Yes man excited but little nervous.

Austin: What are the challenges you guys have as a band?

Stefan Marais:

On stage or overall?

Austin: Overall

Illona Grobler:

I think at this stage, we love what we do, but we all work full time and sometimes work interferes with the band stuff. But this is our passion and we know our hard work will pay off one day.

Marcel:

Having a girl in the band, hahahaha. No just joking, I think the biggest challenges we face are time due to everybody having to have full time jobs and finances for promotion, gear etc.

Stefan Marais:

I feel exactly like that.

Austin: You want Stef to fight you Marcel?

Stefan Marais:

Hahahaha.

Illona Grobler:

Hahaha, Marcel knows what emoji I want to send him now.

Marcel:

Stef wants to send me a high 5.

Stefan Marais:

Haha that’s actually true.

Austin: Any experience on touring?

Illona Grobler:

Not yet, but hopefully soon.

Stefan Marais:

Not yet but planning on doing so!

Illona Grobler:

Maybe when I go solo if they keep treating me this way.

Stefan Marais:

Solo and single thats what I tell her.

Austin: What bands inspired you guys?

Illona Grobler:

For me definitely flyleaf and paramore.

Marcel:

Oooh so many man, hard to say for me but I try to listen to a lot of music that is like us. Check out a band from Alaska called Divides.

Stefan Marais:

Foo figters, paramore, flyleaf, for me and out of the metal scene, August burns red, memphis may fire, For today, and loads more.

Austin: August burns Red to be coming to S.A on August so be there Steph and I would check that band out Marcel.

Stefan Marais:

Awesome.

Austin: Do your band gets inspiration from the olden bands or the modern ones?

Marcel:

Man it’s a mixture, sound wise a lot from current bands but appreciate the deepness and honesty of older bands like Nirvana.

Stefan Marais:

I agree

Austin: So what are the first step you guys used in making your first track?

Marcel:

It differs for every track but strangely usually it starts with me and Stef working out a rhythm on bass and drums with a chord progression we like then it evolves from there but our first song, Illona had the melody and words and we just built it from there.

Illona Grobler:

Yes, usually one person comes with an idea. And we build it from there. And when we have our song we listen what we can do to make it more interesting and fun.

Austin: Which places do you guys think you would be playing in the nearest future?

Illona Grobler:

In South Africa we would like to play all the big festivals (aardklop, oppikoppi and innibos), if we think a little bigger our dream is to play warp tour, especially for marcel.

Marcel:

Yeah Warped is the dream man, over here there are so many quality bands out there it is hard to land slots but we are hanging back a bit until the EP drops.

Austin: Oppikoppi, isn’t it the festival that hot chicks run naked?

Stefan Marais:

Not all of them are hot, we are also playing Riot fest and Railways in the near future.

Austin: That’s very cool, I love you guys dream.

Marcel:

Thanks bro.

Austin: Sure, how important are your fans?

Marcel:

Our fans are more important than anything else, they are the reason we do this. From the songs we write to the shows we put on.

Illona Grobler:

Yes if we don’t have fans we won’t be able to do what we love and as marcel said they are the reason we do this.

Austin: Any pre ritual show?

Marcel:

Red Bull!!

Stefan Marais:

Haha yep.

Austin:

You guys don’t drink blood and run in fire circles?

Marcel:

Hahaha, Nooo, Illona runs around in circles but that is because she is looking for her gear (mic, keyboard).

Stefan Marais:

Hahahahaha.

Illona Grobler:

Hahahaha, I’m so not the forgetful one in the band.

Austin: Then who is the forgetful one in the band?

Marcel:

Okay I must admit we used to give Lona a lot of grief but lately we all have forgotten major items (drum sticks, cables, amp pedals, iPad for midi controller).

Stefan Marais:

Yap everyone has a turn.

Illona Grobler:

Yes, it’s true.

Austin: Name your favorite character in Game of thrones?

Marcel:

Haha you can’t have a favorite in that show otherwise they get killed off next.

Stefan Marais:

Haha exactly.

Yeaaaa, so that’s the end of the interview, it’s been awesome talking to the guys from The Just, so watch out for this band here at Audioinferno. Have a great weekend you guys and keep supporting your local bands\m/.
